Our Men’s Haverim group is reading through and discussing the book of Hebrews during the months of August and September. For more information, see this blog post.

But we do see Jesus, who was made lower than the angels for a little while, now crowned with glory and honor because he suffered death, so that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone.

Hebrews 2:9 New International Version

Summary:

  • The Hebrews author continues building his case for Jesus’ superiority through discussing the positions where God placed the angels and Jesus.
  • He quotes Psalm 8:4-6 which says that all things were placed under the authority of angels and that God placed mankind and the Son a “little lower” than them.
  • However, now we see Jesus, the Son who was placed lower than the angels for a while, now crowned with glory and honor because he suffered death and tasted it for mankind. He is crowned and now all things are subject to Him.

Other Thoughts:

  • Here and in other places the author points out Jesus’ humanity, but also that he has been crowned over all things and all things are subjected to Him.
  • The highlight of Jesus’ humanity is that he suffered death (v. 9). The angels and other spiritual beings don’t taste death, yet because Jesus did and because he tasted death for all of us, he is now crowned with glory and honor.
  • Why would God be mindful of mankind, as mentioned in the quote of Psalm 8? Or maybe a better question is why would God care for mankind when we’ve rejected him by our sin? By suffering death, Jesus shows God’s amazing love for mankind and essentially places us above the angels along with Jesus.
  • Do you recognize that Jesus was fully human and what he truly sacrificed by tasting death so that you could be with him, crowned in glory and honor?
