New resources found in support of the Hampton Roads Church Diversity Task Force, September 2020
The Hampton Road Church Diversity Task Force had it’s initial virtual meeting on August 30th. The purpose of the group is to connect with the elders, provide a collective view of what unity is for the church and make actionable recommendations to the staff and congregation.
As we prepare for future meetings, we’ve been sharing some resources that group members have found useful in understanding issues of racism in America. This post provides a list. I’m in the process of revising the Injustice Resource pages on BentonBlog, but since that may take a few days, I’m posting these here and will add to them as needed.

- Race in America – provides a great summary of racism issues in America by Phil Vischer, creator of Veggie Tales.
- Race in America – Part 2 – Phil Vischer’s follow-up video answering four questions he was asked frequently after posting the first video – it contains some insights into what we can do about racism.
- The Gardener’s Tale by Camara Jones – One of the Diversity Task Force members, Cookie Palacios, recommended this video on our August 30th call. It offers an allegorical look on systematic racism using the story of a gardener and what happens with how she plants her seeds. Also available is an interview with Camara Jones explaining the Tale.

New Resource: The 1619 Project
- Maya Birden shared information on the New York Times series “The 1619 Project“, created by journalist Nikole Hannah Jones. Maya is scheduled to be part of a virtual event with Ms. Jones on September 17!
