2021 HRC New Testament Reading Plan: daily NT reading devotional thoughts.
1 In the past God spoke to our ancestors through the prophets at many times and in various ways, 2 but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom also he made the universe. 3 The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word. After he had provided purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven. 4 So he became as much superior to the angels as the name he has inherited is superior to theirs.

The book of Hebrews starts with a key statement: Jesus has spoken! In the past, God spoke through the prophets and by angels, but now He speaks through His Son.
Jesus is described with these seven attributes:
- appointed heir of all things
- creator through whom God made the universe
- radiance of God’s glory
- the exact representation of God’s being
- sustainer of all things
- purification for sins
- seated at God’s right hand
Because of these things, Jesus is superior to the prophets and to the angels.
Hebrews 1:5-14 provides a contrast of what was said about angels and about the Son, mostly from the Psalms. Jesus is superior to the angels, so his message is more powerful and important.
Questions:
- What do the seven attributes mentioned in verses 1-4 say about Jesus’ superiority to the prophets and angels? Why is this important in considering the message Jesus has spoken?
- Look up the Psalms referenced in verses 5-13 (there should be footnote references in your Bible). What is the context of the verses used? What do the referenced Psalms reveal to you about God’s plan for His Son? (If time allows, look up the other references in 2 Samuel, 1 Chronicles, and Deuteronomy.)
