Coronavirus: Laughter is the Best Medicine

Some resources to make you smile while you’re stuck at home during the Coronavirus pandemic.

My mom, besides being a proud Irish woman, was also an avid reader. Unfortunately, I wasn’t as much a reader, but I always looked forward to when the magazines would arrive in the mail (we didn’t have Internet then). One of my favorites was a magazine that looked like a little book, the Reader’s Digest. I’d grab it as soon as I saw it, glance at the index of articles on the cover and turn quickly to my favorite section. I had to read it quickly so that I could share the jokes and funny stories in that section. Why? Because as Reader’s Digest always reminded us in each issue “Laughter is the Best Medicine”.

American culture often responds to trials, tribulation and tragedy by turning to humor. As hard as things get, it usually helps to find something amusing to make us smile, giggle or outright laugh to get our minds off of the situation. We sometimes can take it too far and become insensitive, demeaning or even racist. As Hebrews 5:4 (NIV) tells us ” Nor should there be obscenity, foolish talk or coarse joking, which are out of place, but rather thanksgiving”.

There’s no question that the Coronavirus is a very serious situation, but I hope that you’ll find the following memes, cartoons and links amusing, and that they’ll help you smile and laugh, mostly at ourselves and how we tend to think during difficult times.

Let’s start with a classic Chuck Norris joke…

Anyone who’s been to a grocery store lately can understand the humor in the next one…

Or how about some help with teaching math while homeschooling…

TIred of singing Happy Birthday twice when you wash your hands? Use “Wash Your Lyrics” to try something new…

There’s no sports going on right now, and as a Boston Red Sox fan I miss singing Sweet Caroline… and the CDC has a few things to say about that song…

And these song lyrics vs the CDC for our Hampton Roads members who serve or have served in the Armed Forces (From Ramstein Air Base’s Facebook page)…

Image may contain: possible text that says 'USMC: In the snow of far-off Northern lands and in sunny tropic scenes CDC: We publish risk assessments for each country... USMC: You will find us always on the job, The United States Marines! CDC: Please, please stay home when you're sick. We're begging you. THE MARINES' HYMN, VERSE|'

Image may contain: possible text that says 'USN: Stand Navy out to sea, fight our battle cry! We'll never change our course so vicious foes steer shy-y-y-y! CDC: Are our travel advisories a joke to you? ANCHORS AWEIGH, VERSE'

And now for some breaking news on John Travolta…

The guy who came up with this also said “I started a joke” (see what I did there, Bee Gees fans 😉 )

Here are some oddly appropriate scriptures to share…look them up (NIV is the best wording for these):

  • James 4:8
  • 1 Chronicles 16:22a
  • Psalm 26:6

I’ll try to add more later. If you see something that’s funny yet appropriate and not political, racial, or otherwise offensive, send me a comment (below).
