Hebrews 5:7-10 – Jesus is Greater Than the High Priest – He learned obedience through suffering and became the source of salvation

7 During the days of Jesus’ life on earth, he offered up prayers and petitions with fervent cries and tears to the one who could save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverent submission. 8 Son though he was, he learned obedience from what he suffered 9 and, once made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him 10 and was designated by God to be high priest in the order of Melchizedek.

Summary:

• Jesus cried out with prayers and petitions for God to save him from death, certainly in the Garden before facing the cross, but also over and over as he faced other temptations.
• He was heard because he submitted himself reverently to God’s will.
• Jesus learned, or matured and grew, in his obedience through the suffering he endured by keeping from sin, which enabled hi to become our source of salvation by his perfect sacrifice.
• Because of all this, God designated him a “high priest in the order of Melchizedek”,

Other Thoughts:

• Jesus cried out and was heard by God because of his reveret submission – in the Garden he cried out for another way, but submitted himself to God’s will. God was able to save him from death, but it was by resurrection that God answered the paryer he heard. God hears our prayers but may not answer them in the way we expect, but will answer them according to His will.
• Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross completed our salvation – his obedience enabled him to become the source of salvation.
• Verses 8 -9 say that Jesus “learned obedience” and was “made perfect” – what does this mean considering that Jesus was without sin? He learned what it means to suffer temptation and matured in his submission, and by perfect it means complete, finished. Jesus completed his mission to become the source of our salvation by enduring suffering yet never sinning.
